Can You Find a Vet for Your Pet Reptile in a Veterinarians Directory?
May 13, 2011 7:19 am PetsIf you have a pet reptile, naturally you want to make sure it will receive the best care if it becomes sick. However, for reptile owners, this is not simply a matter of consulting a veterinarians directory and picking the practice nearest to your home.
The difficulty is that most veterinary training focuses on the needs of the types of animals vets are most likely to encounter. So while you may easily find vets in your area who are experts on the ailments of dogs, cats, pigs, cattle and horses by checking Yellow pages or a veterinarians directory, your nearest reptile specialist could be based miles away from you.
Do not leave it until your pet becomes sick to find a vet who will be able to give it expert treatment. Check with a herp society to see whether they have a list of vets they recommend. Look in an online veterinarians directory for vets who have expertise in the treatment of reptiles. Call veterinary societies and ask for their advice. Ask fellow reptile owners, especially those who are knowledgeable about their pets, whether they can recommend a vet.
If you locate a vet in the veterinarians directory who may be suitable, call and ask them what experience they have of treating reptiles in general and specifically the species of your pet. Do they belong to a professional body of reptile experts? Do they keep up with medical developments in that field?
If you are lucky, your local vet will have the experience to treat your reptile if it becomes sick. However, do not assume this is the case. You may have to research many vets in the veterinarians directory and travel long distances for the welfare of your pet. If you are not prepared to do so, perhaps a reptile is not a suitable pet for you.
