Pet Accessories for large breeds of dog.
January 26, 2012 5:00 pm PetsThe pet accessories sector tends to mainly cater for small and toy breeds. It wasn’t long ago that these types of dog were seen as a fashion accessory to the rich and famous, and when famous celebs started to walk around the high street with a dog under their arm in a bag we started to notice a big increase in the demand for such accessories. These accessories included designer dog collars, coats, hoodies and designer carriers.
I find this all very frustrating. I am the owner of two ‘larger’ breeds of dog and I find it difficult to find smarter more bling items for my girls. Granted, you couldn’t exactly carry a German Shepard under your arm (well you may be able to but I would like to see it) I am talking more about coats and other posh accessories such as dog beds and smart collars, all of which seem to be in short supply. Here are a few of my favourite items below for large breeds.
Hunter dog collars – I live in the UK and there are not too many suppliers in the country that specialise in selling Hunter dog collars, but luckily the few that do have a decent range. My favourite is the Hunter Sioux collar, a collar that has an Inca/Mayan style design. Hunter collars are truly some of the best designs available for large breeds, the leather is soft but thick and strong, the detail is finished in lovely materials such as nickel or beads for example. You get the feeling that a lot of care and attention has been put into every collar you handle. I cannot recommend these enough, but they are definitely for large breeds only.
Doggy Things dog coats – There are very few people that use dog coats for large breeds unless they are skinny breeds such as greyhounds and whippets. But if you have a senior dog then buying a coat for them for winter time may be a very wise idea. The problems is that most coats look BORING and finding something a little different can be quite a task, that is where Doggy things has come to the rescue. Last year they released some of the nicest quality coats I have seen. The ‘waffle’ dog coat is a hooded padded dog jacket that is very reminiscent of a human duffle coat. The coat has a removable hood which is fur lined and the jacket itself has a fleece lining. Each jacket is finished with a posh ‘waffle’ coat of arms which is stitched, not printed. These coats cost around the £20.00 mark each, so they are also fantastic value for money.
Lastly, I would like to suggest a dog bed, I know there are lots of Dog Beds out there for large breeds but one in particular caught my eye from a company called ‘House of Paws’. The Tweed Oval dog bed is one of the smartest soft oval dog beds I have seen. The tweed effect stitching on the bed looks fantastic and there are some lovely colours available including pink for the girls and a lovely traditional hunter green. Visit the house of paws website for more information.
The internet does have quite a few good suppliers for large breeds out there but we will never have the choice that the toy breed owners do, there just isn’t the demand.
